Hand analysis with the Texas Calculatem Poker Software
We analyze one of the worst bad beats of all time with our advanced poker software, Texas Calculatem.
This hand was played online, at Full Tilt Poker, at a $200/$400 No-Limit Texas Hold'em table. The following players were seated: PimpOwnage ($39,200), Erick Lindgren ($15,600), Erik Sagstrom ($40,000), Mike Matusow ($35,888), TexasLimitKing ($5,599) and Dazzy ($51,297).
The hand started with Erik Sagstrom raising to $1,400 from under the gun with 7c-5c. Mike Matusow, sitting directly to the left of the Swede called with Ad-9d, and the rest of the players folded.
Our poker odds software tells us that Matusow hade a 61.51% chance to win the hand at this point. He couldn't have hoped for much better with his rather weak poker hand, even in a short-handed game with many aggressive players. The poker software would probably have advised Matusow to fold his hand.
The flop came 9c-6c-9s, giving Matusow trip nines while Sagstrom had a flush draw as well as a gut-shot straight draw. According to the poker software, Matusow had increased his lead slightly, to 65.25%. Sagstrom bet $2,400 and Matusow decided to slow-play his monster hand and just called.
The turn was the 9h - Matusow now had four of a kind! Sagstrom bet $4,800 and Matusow smooth-called once again. The Swedish online pro would need a miracle to turn this hand around. The poker odds software now reveals that Sagstrom only had 2.27% to win the pot.
Only one card could save Sagstrom, the 8c that would give him a straight flush. And that was precisely what happened - the 8c fell on the river. Sagstrom now bet $17,800, Matusow moved all-in for $27,288, and Sagstrom called.
Matusow could hardly believe his eyes when the cards were turned over and he saw the $72,373 pot go Sagstrom's way. Mike Matusow is known as "The Mouth" and known for his blow-ups at the poker table. One can only imagine what happened at Matusow's house after this hand...
