Poker Odds in Texas Holdem - How to Calculate Them
A poker player who knows the poker odds has an enormous edge at any table - particularly if his opponents can't say the same. Based on the probable outcome given the cards in hand and on the board, the odds are the key to of making the right decisions in any poker hand and getting your money in with the best of it. Knowing the poker odds backwards and forwards is simply one of the most fundamental tools needed to become a winning poker player.
Counting poker odds and outs
To calculate the poker odds against improving your hand, the first thing you need to know is your current number of "outs" (the number of cards that improve your hand.) Example: You're playing Texas Hold'em. You hold 7-8 and the flop comes A-5-6. You have an open-ended straight draw to the nuts (with no pair or possible flush on the board), as any four or nine will give you the straight.
So, as far as you know, you have eight outs to a winning hand.
With 52 cards in the deck and five in front of you (your hand plus the flop), that leaves 47 cards unseen. Of those 47, 39 are non-outs and eight are good; 39/8 = 4.88. So 4.88-1 is then the poker odds against making your straight on the turn.
If you include both the turn and the river card in the calculation, the odds would then be about 2.18-1.
